Now that the Government has announced that Heathrow is its preferred option for expansion of airport capacity in the South East, our focus shifts to taking the project through the planning process.

The planning process for major infrastructure sets out a number of phases and steps that we need to go through to obtain development consent for our project.

On these pages you can find out more about the planning process and the timelines we will be working to. It is important to note that further development of our proposals, public consultation and assessment of the benefits and impacts of the project will be undertaken before we submit our application for development consent, sometime in 2019.

Once the application is submitted, it will be examined by the Planning Inspectorate before the Secretary of State confirms whether the project can proceed.

As part of our engagement with the independent Airports Commission, we conducted two comprehensive public consultations on our early proposals and compensation principles. You can find out more about these here.

Extensive public consultation will continue to be at the heart of everything we do over the coming years as we prepare our application for planning consent.
