Heathrow is currently Britain’s largest single site employer with more than 76,000 people working at the airport. Many of these people live in the neighbouring boroughs and communities, areas we have gained significant support given the economic potential from expansion and the many jobs Heathrow supports.
Through the campaign group Back Heathrow, some 100,000 local residents have signed a petition advocating support for an expanded hub airport. The group have successfully organised events across local communities and in Central London to help give a voice to those who have a direct stake in the airport and its future.
Last year the independent Airport Commission gave us unanimous backing for expansion. As part of the study conducted, thousands of submissions were sent in from local residents and businesses in which showed overwhelming support for Heathrow expansion.
Local political and business support
As a national asset and global gateway, Heathrow is at the heart of the West London and Thames Valley economy. The result is significant support from regional councils, chambers, business groups and political leaders.
With up to 40,000 new jobs for local communities and the potential to end youth unemployment in neighbouring boroughs, Heathrow has built a strong relationship with leading universities and forged many partnerships..
