Concrete is a major contributor to climate change. Globally, it is responsible for about 8% of carbon emissions. Like any airport, Heathrow uses a large volume of concrete, so it is working to achieve the lowest possible levels of ’embodied carbon’.

Not satisfied just with adopting best practice, Heathrow is pushing the boundaries in low carbon concrete, collaborating across the industry to find the most innovative and lowest carbon alternatives to current practice.

Working with the University of Surrey we are moving into testing mode – studying in detail the potential carbon reductions we can achieve – and helping to spread best practice. This work also contributes to our plans for carbon neutral expansion.
