This week’s #lifeatheathrow featured photo is courtesy of Baggage Operations Coordinator and Police Special Constable Gregory Price-Jones, capturing a snowy sunrise at Heathrow Airport.

We’ve caught up with Gregory to find out more about his career at Heathrow Airport.

How long have you worked at Heathrow?

6 years in total across Security, CRS and Baggage.

If you had to describe Heathrow in 3 words, what would they be?

Bustling – Exciting – Growing

What’s a day in the life of your job really like?

A typical day ranges from an early shift starting at 05:00 or a late finish at 23:00, and usually begins for me in my home terminal, T5, with an operational conference call with our key stakeholders British Airways & Babcock. From there anything can happen!

I am always out and about working with the wider ‘Team Heathrow Baggage’ to ensure the baggage systems are efficient and running smoothly.

Reporting back into our BSM colleagues in APOC with the each days’ performance is key to continuously strive to get every bag travelling with its owner. This is often done on the run with a range of very clever apps on our phones. One of these apps provide real-time fault reports and status’ around the wide baggage systems. Another app enables me to track a bag anywhere within Heathrow once it has been logged into the system. The team and I also have access to apps used by other departments such as Frontline and Spot & Report.

With various on-going projects such as the replacement of every Hold Baggage Screening X-ray across the airport, there are a huge range of meetings I attend to pass on our operational insight throughout the design and development stages and later to ensure the effective transition into the live operation.

A lot of my role involves building positive working relationships and communicating effectively with a whole range of stakeholders, and as I’m always moving from one task/meeting to another, you’ll often see me with a coffee in hand!

My role also involves using airside vehicles to quickly respond to baggage incidents and co-ordinate with the management and deployment of a 100+ resilience and airline staff and the repatriation of 20,000+ bags supported by the Baggage IRT and wider operations teams.

No day in baggage is the same, some can be challenging, but all are rewarding!

What do you enjoy most about Life at Heathrow?

Being involved in the excitement of the airport every day and knowing that my role makes a positive difference to those I interact with both directly and indirectly.

What’s your advice to someone who is thinking about a career at Heathrow?

Choose a role you think you’d enjoy but also challenges you, try to get some work experience and above all make sure you apply!

Favourite spot to take photos at Heathrow?

Apron of T5B & C

Favourite moment while working at Heathrow?

There’s a few that spring to mind that have been rewarding, but supporting in outbound and return Team GB movements to the Rio Olympics was definitely a highlight!

Hobbies? What do you do in your spare time?

I share my spare time between spending time with my children and being a Police Special Constable. As a Special Constable I am attached to an Emergency Response Team and carry out the full range of policing duties from attending burglaries, to domestics, mental health and public order incidents. A recent highlight was supporting the policing of the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry & Megan Markle, and Reading Festival.
