Is your school signed up to take part in the Heathrow Primary School Challenge? The challenge is back this year and we’re now taking applications from local schools to take part.

The Heathrow Primary School Challenge invests in over 50 schools in Ealing, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Slough, South Buckinghamshire, Spelthorne, and Windsor & Maidenhead.  The challenge is linked to the curriculum and has been established to inspire the next generation to consider a career at the airport.

The challenge provides an enjoyable way for 10 and 11-year olds to explore their enterprise skills, develop social and personal skills and encourages team working and communications skills.

What is the Heathrow Primary School Coding Challenge all about?

Heathrow’s Primary School Challenge has been established to inspire the next generation to consider a career at the airport. The challenge provides an enjoyable way for young people to explore their enterprise skills, develop social and personal skills and encourages team working and communications skills.

Students receive a presentation about cargo at Heathrow, highlighting; the volume of cargo Heathrow manages, the different types of items that are carried and the journey that cargo takes through the airport.

  • Working in groups of four, students will use Scratch, a computer coding programme, to code a journey for their chosen cargo to get to the plane to their chosen destination;
  • The challenge enables young people to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively, whilst bringing the curriculum to life and encouraging the children to aim high;
  • The challenge is a timed exercise, encouraging team work and developing time management skills.

How can your school get involved?

If you have any questions, or would like to find out more about how to get involved, please email Kathleen.Healy@volunteerheathrow.com .
