Did you know Heathrow is Britain’s biggest port by value? We’re celebrating UKTI’s #ExportingisGREAT week all this week with fun facts and British exporter stories!

Heathrow, Britain’s biggest port, is once again proud to join Exporting is Great, an initiative launched by UK Trade & Investment to promote and encourage British exporters.

No two days are the same at Heathrow. Whether it is fine bone English China en-route to the USA or fresh Scottish salmon being loaded onto a flight bound for Shanghai, the diversity of Britain’s hub airport in supporting exporters is truly unique.

More destinations, more opportunities…

In 2015 total goods that passed through Heathrow reached £118bn, a significant achievement and more than what our two biggest seaports Southampton and Felixstowe processed combined.

Our unique position of serving over 180 destinations in more than 80 countries allows businesses across the UK to benefit from direct access to major economic centres.

Just weeks ago for example, Garuda Indonesia moved to Heathrow to begin a new 5-time weekly direct service to Jakarta, Indonesia, linking the UK more frequently with one of the fastest growing economies in south-east Asia!

Below we explore some of the goods that bid bon voyage to the UK and headed out to the world marketplace from Heathrow:

Winning the global race…

As a historic island trading nation, connectivity has always been crucial to our success in the UK. 95% of cargo at Heathrow leaves on passenger flights meaning creating new and nurturing existing routes to economic powerhouses is vital to maintaining the UK’s economy.

This cargo when pooled with local, regional and international passenger demand at the UK’s hub airport, Heathrow, helps makes more flights and routes viable for all.

In this way, Heathrow is truly a national asset to be proud of. Recently we announced a £180m blueprint to upgrade our cargo facilities so that Britain’s exporters can continue to reach all four corners of the globe and in a more efficient way.

This week we’ll be celebrating some of the great British exporters on Twitter with new businesses profiled each day – including some of the amazing stats behind their success! Follow @yourHeathrow and keep an eye on #ExportingisGREAT for more.
