Stephen Killick, MBE – Senior Airfield Officer

What is your official job title?
Since joining Heathrow BAA from British Airways in 1976 I have held number of roles within the company, mainly in operational roles. I started in General Services for a short while before progressing as an Aircraft Marshaller, then Manoeuvring area assistant, Manoeuvring area officer, Terminal Duty Officer Terminal 1, Senior Movement area officer, Airside Roads Duty Officer, and finally Senior Airfield officer (current role).

I have been employed at Heathrow since October 1976, which is 39 years in October
How did you get into your job and why?
I came to work at Heathrow, mainly because my father already worked here and recommended a career in the aviation industry,
Also being a local lad from West Drayton, aviation was part of the local community and many Jobs and businesses depended on Heathrow success. My interests started when, as young lad, I would come to the airport and watch the aircraft arriving and departing.
What’s a day in the life of your job really like?
Challenging, hectic, thought-provoking. Most of all, it’s constantly changing, due to any number of reasons which would take up two pages to write, but include anyway here are just a few weather, incidents, Air Traffic control, infrastructure resilience, and building and maintenance work.
What’s the hardest part of your job?
The hardest part of the job is keeping the customers happy, balancing the needs of the business and customers. Most of all, maintaining the safety and security at the highest standard, in a highly regulated / licensed area in a cost effective and efficient manner 24/7!
Favourite thing about working at an airport?
The environment, every day is a new challenge.

What has been a particularly memorable moment for you while working at Heathrow?
Being awarded an MBE for services to aviation
Any advice for passengers?
Always try to pre-plan your journey to the airport allowing plenty of time, and enjoy the experience of Heathrow.

West Drayton- less than three miles from Heathrow
Any children or pets?
I have a rescue dog called Benji, who is two years old.
Aviation photography , golf, bird-watching , travel, collecting various items.

I also served an a Trustee / Director of the company pension fund for over eight years and played a part in the negotiations with Ferrovial when they took the controlling stake in BAA.
