ITV’s Britain’s Busiest Airport – Episode 1 Review
UPDATE, June 5: The Britain’s Busiest Airport – Heathrow series started with a bang last night with a whopping 3 million viewers tuning in and #britainsbusiestairport trending in 3rd spot across the UK! With the help of QANTAS we also launched an exciting competition for a viewer to win a trip for two to Australia!
NATS Air Traffic Controller Paul ‘Hoops’ Hooper explained the challenges of operating an airport where a plane lands or takes off every 45 seconds, and how important it is to keep things moving smoothly.
“When Heathrow sneezes, the rest of Europe and the world catches a cold,” Paul said.
Many on social media were surprised to hear how the ATCs are required to break every 90 minutes to keep at the top of their craft.
Veteran Airfield Safety Officer Glenn Palmer‘s surprising Foreign Object Debris find on the runway – a pair of Calvin Klein men’s underwear – was the next to light up the Twittersphere. Glenn was also featured later on in the episode with his unique, and graceful, air craft marshalling!
Lover-boy Lewis was next to grace the screen, as the cameras followed him as he met his, now, fiancee for the first time…ever! The two had met on line, and after a transatlantic flight and a slight delay Lewis finally met the love-of-his-life American Amanda Gilmore.
Viewers were then introduced to Michael – a man down on his luck that had been staying at the airport. Thankfully, Heathrow Airport has it’s very own group of social workers, Heathrow Travel Care, who have been in place since 1972. Travel Care were able to help Michael with food and getting him access to employment contacts. For more infomation visit Travel Care’s website: http://heathrowtravelcare.co.uk/.
The City of London Corporation Heathrow Animal Reception Centre featured next as they dealt with everything from companion dogs, to paperwork for cats and looking after a tiger!
We couldn’t finish a review of the programme without talking about the unique London Ambulance Service cycle paramedics and their great work in assisting two passengers. Their team is the only cycle unit at any airport in the UK which surprised many Twitter users who were full of praise for them. Given the interest we thought we’d provide a bit more info on the team who recently celebrated 10 years at Heathrow!
Also in the episode were Heathrow’s Airport Operations Manager Anuj Bhardwaj, who helped reunite some minors with their worried parents, and Passenger Experience Manager Demetri (who features more in Episode 2) who helped assist the LAS with injured passengers.
Win a trip to Australia for 2 flying Qantas!
