ITV’s Britain’s Busiest Airport – Heathrow, Episode 3 Preview
The 3rd and final episode of ITV’s Britain’s Busiest Airport – Heathrow finished off the series with a whopping 2.9 million viewers! We’ve taken a look at some of the highlights from the show that got people talking on social media. Enjoy!
The episode began with Heathrow’s Sundeep Ballay – a young rising start in our security team – as he investigated a man wearing four shirts! Further investigation revealed the man was simply trying to be an excess luggage charge, prompting many on social media to talk of similar incidents they’ve been through.
Likewise, the twittersphere lit up following Sundeep’s recount about a young girl who had surprised her family by bringing her hamster along for the holiday – which was only found at the security scanning point!
Moving on through the episode, viewers got to look at what goes into turning around aircraft and making sure cargo is put safely into the hold.
Later on viewers got a behind the scenes look at the world below Heathrow – the baggage system. Chris Earley, a veteran of 39-years at Heathrow, showed how the automatic sorting system organises the bags for each flight using sophisticated scanning technology.
Also included in the episode was a look at the departures project, with many social media users surprised to see staff searching for passengers in the terminals just moments before their flights were due to close!
Extra content: A surprise for Ginger and our interactive security test…
Baggage handler “Ginger” stole the show in episode 2, as social media users got behind the airport veteran of 25 yeas after hearing he’d never been on an A380! We teamed up with Qantas to surprise him and make his dreams a reality. Watch the full surprise here.
We also launched our interactive security screening test to coincide with episode 3’s focus on security. Take the test now, here.
Episode 3 Preview
The third and final instalment of ITV’s Britain’s Busiest Airport – Heathrow goes behind the scenes in Departures, where teams across all of Heathrow work to process 100,000 passengers and their baggage every day. Tune in to ITV at 9pm on 18 June to watch!
Heathrow veteran Chris Earley, shows us the ropes in the airport baggage sorting facilities. Managing the miles of conveyor belts and other complex equipment is no small feat!
Meanwhile, airline check-in staff process passengers while juggling a tight schedule. Security Manager Sundeep and his team must manually search bags at a busy time, much to the displeasure of some passengers.
Leaving just one prohibited item in hand baggage can mean delays for everyone in the lane, but spotting and searching these bags is essential to the safety of everyone at the airport.
The extradition team is tasked with ensuring police suspects are placed to departing flights with minimal disruption to the rest of the passengers, and the Dispatch and Ramp Management teams have their schedule thrown awry by a passenger who disappears after checking onto a flight.
