ITV’s Britain’s Busiest Airport – Heathrow, Episode 2 Review
Episode 2 of Britain’s Busiest Airport – Heathrow saw 3 million viewers tune in and a host of activity on social media channels once again using the #britainsbusiestairport hashtag!
Viewers were first of treated to local Engineers Phil and Alex successfully fix an air bridge ahead of an incoming aircraft with minutes to spare.
“Ginger”, a veteran Menzies baggage handler, then lit up the screen and people’s hearts on social media as we all watched him gently load on the remains of a deceased person.
It was Ginger’s admission that he’d never been aboard an A380, despite handling baggage for them hundreds of times, that led to many Tweeters calling for him to be given a flight (watch what happened next here).
After watching the baggage loaded onto the flight, viewers were then given a glimpse into the complicated and rapid process of turning around a Qantas A380 – meeting not only the Customer Service Manager Victoria but also the pilot as he performed his final inspection of the aircraft undercarraige.
Next up was the airside safety team, including Dan Riggs and Steve Killick who were performing speed enforcement on airport roads to keep our workers safe. Those who get infringements lose points on their airside licence only. Safety is the number one priority for our team, as accidents can be fatal and cause large delays at the airport.
Cargo movements, security, MET Police and check-in processes were all then covered before the show took a look a Terminal 2 | The Queen’s Terminal’s opening by Her Majesty the Queen.
Heathrow’s Fiona Carleton explained about how much work was being completed behind the scenes in preparation, before viewers got to see Her Majesty unveil a commemorative plaque (see the day in pictures here) in the Terminal, 55 years after she had done in the original Terminal 2.
Qantas Pilots live chat and the ultimate AvGeek comp #votemeairside
After the show our friends at Qantas hosted a live chat for viewers to ask their questions of two of their A380 pilots – using the hashtag #QantasXHeathrow. The pilots were inundated with questions ranging from where was the best airport to land at, to what was their favourite part about being a pilot.
Additionally, we launched our #votemeairside competition, giving UK AvGeeks a chance to win a tour airside at Heathrow including in and around a Qantas A380 and up the control tower thanks to our friends at Qantas and NATS respectively!
Episode 2 Preview
Heathrow’s very own engineers Alex, Grant and Phil (pictured) feature in Episode 2 as well as a QANTAS A380, and a host of other exciting behind the scenes content. We’re also launching another competition – specifically for our AvGeeks!
Episode 2 starts off with Alex and Phil racing against time to get an air bridge fixed before an incoming flight arrives. Both Alex and Phil are locals who have worked their way up via Heathrow engineering apprenticeships and feature in a lot of the animated GIFs we’ve been entertaining our Twitter followers with.
Next up, viewers get a look at what it takes to turnaround a Qantas A380 flight, looking at everything from customer service managers, to baggage and refuelling – as well as the pilot’s own checks. We’ll have some more info on Qantas pilots as well two online after the show to take part in a live Twitter chat about their jobs.
The episode also looks at Heathrow preparing for the royal opening of our newest terminal – Terminal 2 | The Queen’s Terminal. We’ve got plenty more pics that we’ll be posting in our Features section from the day last summer of Her Majesty the Queen meeting all of the people that made the new terminal possible.
Also featuring in this exciting episode are cargo crews, check-in staff, plane spotters and security staff.
