Network Rail has today confirmed there is a strong case for a new southern rail access link to Heathrow, which would connect passengers to the airport from Waterloo Station and destinations further south.
While the study does not specify the final route southern rail access would take, it makes it clear there is a demand for improved rail access to the airport from the south, whether or not Heathrow expands, and there are feasible solutions to explore further.
Welcoming Network Rail’s findings, Heathrow Head of Surface Access Chris Joyce said, “A new rail link connecting Heathrow to south London and Surrey is a huge opportunity to connect an additional 4.8 million passengers to Heathrow, and allow us to treble our rail capacity by 2040.”
“This is great news for passengers who will have even more public transport options to and from the airport. It’s also really good news for Heathrow’s neighbours as it will minimise road traffic in the area.”

Increasing sustainable transport options to Heathrow
Heathrow has a surface access strategy that is focussed on getting passengers and airport colleagues onto sustainable transport modes such as rail, bus, coach and cycles.
The airport already hosts the world’s largest single site car share scheme, the busiest bus and coach station in the UK and has the UK’s first publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling site.
These efforts have contributed to maintaining airport related road traffic at broadly static levels over the last 25 years, despite passenger numbers increasing by almost 80%.
Network Rail will now seek to conduct a “GRIP 1-2” study which would include on-site surveys, a holistic study of the airport area and maintenance, amongst other considerations. Download the study here.

It’s World Water Day today, so we’re taking a look at how Heathrow is improving the way this precious resource is used! To do this, we’ve caught up Mark Tomkins, Heathrow’s Resources and Environment Manager, to look at his role and some of the initiatives in place to improve water use at the airport!
What is your role in water at Heathrow?
Here at Heathrow, we use roughly the same amount of water as the city of Canterbury and we are the biggest water user in our catchment by a long way.
In my role as Resources and Environment Manager, I work with many departments across Heathrow, looking at how we use water today, how we should use it in the future, and what challenges we need to address to get there.
It’s a big job because water is important for our business and ability to deliver a good experience for our customers, which range from passengers to airlines, and commercial outlets.
It is used in everything from toilet facilities, cooling our terminal buildings, food and drink preparation, irrigating landscaping around the airport, washing aircraft – washing anything in fact!
What most people wouldn’t know is that we also generate a lot of water at Heathrow that we return to the environment. Nearly every drop of rainwater that falls on Heathrow is collected and ultimately released into local rivers and lakes.
In total, this amounts to over 2 billion litres a year!
Why is water such as important issue?
For most people in the UK, the value of water is only thought of when they receive a utility bill. The reality is, water isn’t really truly appreciated until it isn’t readily available!
With London and the South East of England experiencing a population boom – London alone will have up to an extra 2 million people by 2030 – the challenge of providing enough water for everyone is growing.
This is going to be an important challenge and given our large thirst for water, one where Heathrow can really make a contribution.
World Water Day is a great opportunity to recognise that each and every person can make a difference on what is an issue of global significance.
Why is water such an important for Heathrow Airport? What are you doing?
Heathrow generates millions of pounds of benefits to the UK each year but it does not do so at any cost.
We’ve been looking at innovative ways of reducing water use and improving local water quality as far back as the 1970’s but we are always looking at new ways that we can take this further.
Over the last 10 years alone we have:
Installed vehicle washing facilities that recycle waste water;
Slowed the tap water flow rate in toilet hand basins helping reduce waste;
Installed automatic controls across our water pipe network as well as leak detection technology;
Implemented a rainwater harvesting scheme with the introduction of Terminal 5, re-uses rainwater that falls across the T5 campus;
Upgraded our Mayfield Farm water treatment facility to increase the amount of water it can clean by six-fold; Mayfield Farm is a leading-edge reedbed treatment plant that treat’s de-icer coming from the airport, using natural processes to remove around 7 tonnes of organic pollution each year.
We also created the Heathrow Sustainability Partnership which brings together the over 400 companies working across the airport to educate, encourage and deliver a responsible and sustainable Heathrow – including more efficient water use.
All these efforts will help us to achieve our target to reduce Heathrow’s total water consumption by at least 10% between 2015 and 2020 despite more people using our airport and its facilities.
The only airport in the UK to have two independent water networks?
We are the only airport in the UK to have two significant independent water networks which have been installed at T2 and T5. One network supplies clean drinking water from our local water company to where it is needed.
The other carries clean water pumped from the groundwater under Heathrow to supply areas where drinking water standards are not necessary such as toilet flushing and irrigation.
Some of this is water is fed from rainwater collected from T5. As a result of this process, less energy is wasted in pumping water all the way to the Chilterns to be treated and then back.
We are responsible custodians of our water. It is smart business as it not only saves carbon emissions but reduces costs as well.

For those feeling inspired to put pen to paper, Heathrow is also hosting an Easter poetry competition as part of the initiative, for children under the age of 16, as well as special poetry workshops across the terminals. Danny is currently the Artist in Residence at BBC Comedy, appearing on TV and radio as well as being a columnist for Shortlist. A regular Sunday Times bestseller with his books such as Join Me and Yes Man, which later became a major Warner Brothers film starring Jim Carrey, his latest title in his children’s book series Hamish and the Neverpeople was released earlier this year.
Having initially worked for the BBC when he left university, Michael worked at BBC Schools Television which led to his first book for children called Mind Your Own Business, illustrated by Quentin Blake. Since then, he has written over 100 books as well as working within schools, theatres and appearing on radio and TV. He was also the Children’s Laureate between 2007 and 2009.
Having previously been named one of the top ten literary stars of 2008 by The Times, Laura has risen to fame as a performance poet and illustrator. An alumni of the Brit School, she has penned books such as Darcy Burdock, Ugly Shy Girl, Echoes and Mistakes in the Background.
Previously a Senior Digital Producer for the National Theatre, and at the Royal Opera House and Shakespeare’s Globe, MG Leonard also spent her early career in the music industry running Setanta Records, an independent record label, and managing bands. After leaving the music industry, she trained as an actor, dabbling in directing and producing as well as performing, before deciding to write her stories down.
Her best-selling debut children’s book, Beetle Boy, the first part of the Beetle Trilogy, launched this March to rave reviews and as Waterstones Children’s Book of the Month.

Passengers at Heathrow Airport and Hong Kong International Airport are set to benefit as the two global hubs today formed a partnership to share their expertise and experience.
The collaboration, which is the first of its kind for Heathrow, was signed yesterday by Heathrow CEO, John Holland-Kaye and Airport Authority Hong Kong Chief Executive Officer, Fred Lam.
The two airports will now work together with the aim of improving operations, driving up innovation, achieving world class service for passengers and developing industry leading environmental performance.
Two of the world’s leading hub airports…
As two of the world’s leading international hub airports, they have many similarities that form the basis for a strong relationship. Serving a similar customer profile, they both have a global network of carriers, including home-based airlines, along with substantial cargo and retail businesses.
Both are currently constrained but have high profile expansion plans that would bring economic benefits and jobs to their respective communities.
Colleagues from each airport will work on joint projects, looking to take advantage of emerging trends or opportunities and help shape industry standards.
Areas identified for the first phase include the central management of airport operations, crisis planning, passenger service, future terminal design and the opportunities to be gained from expansion.

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, employers across Heathrow came together this week to pledge over 400 new apprenticeships during 2016.
The pledges came from some of the 400 businesses which work in and around the airport, including members of the Heathrow Sustainability Partnership, at an event hosted by Heathrow Academy to mark National Apprenticeship Week. Businesses making a pledge include Heathrow Airport Limited, World Duty Free, Balfour Beatty and Ferrovial Agroman.
Since 2004, the Heathrow Academy has placed over 1,500 people into apprenticeships, including 82 that graduated last year. Heathrow Airport has invested more than £4 million in the growth of the Academy and has ambitious plans for its future. Should Heathrow expansion go ahead, the airport has promised to offer 10,000 apprenticeships over the course of the project.
Over 75,000 people are employed at Heathrow, and the airport accounts for one in five jobs (22%) in Slough, Spelthorne, Hounslow, Hillingdon and Ealing. In the 11 years since the Academy was established, over 5,000 local residents – from school leaving age upwards – have been placed into further training opportunities and more than 3,000 have been employed at the airport.
Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye pledged for Heathrow to create 50 apprenticeships this year while also outlining his vision for one of his future successors to come from the local area.
“We want Heathrow to be a great place to work, which attracts the most talented people from the local area and allows them to fulfill their potential – an environment where one of the children in a local school today can one day do my job. The Heathrow Academy plays a vital role in giving them the best start to their careers at the airport,” Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye.
Success stories: Meet Valentina and Scott
Hounslow resident Valentina Panoiu, 24, started working for JD Wetherspoon at The Flying Chariot in Terminal 2 as a Bar Associate before moving quickly up the ranks to Shift Manager. After completing a Customer Service and Team Leader apprenticeship, Valentina now has her eyes set on the position of Area Manager and is just starting her Hospitality Supervision and Leadership Advanced apprenticeship.
Scott Berry, who is 25-years-old and from Slough, works for World Duty Free at Terminal 5. Scott recently completed a Team Leader Apprenticeship and is now doing a Management Advanced apprenticeship, but there were a few challenges along the way:
“My apprenticeship experience was full of ups and downs. I had a setback, if I’m honest with myself, I didn’t really take the time and was as efficient as I should have been – but you just learn from that, you’ve just got to pick yourself up,” Scott Berry said.
Scott is now a mentor for other apprentices at the Heathrow Academy, offering the support and inspiration that helped him through his journey.
The number of flora and fauna species around Heathrow has hit the 2,500 mark after Biodiversity Manager Adam Cheeseman discovered an uncommon fungus – Dead Moll’s Fingers – last week. In the second blog in our biodiversity series, Adam gives us an insight into the new discovery and other fungi around the airport.
In my role as Biodiversity Manager at Heathrow I’ve discovered countless new species within the 170 hectares and whenever another is found it’s always exciting for me. Last week, I was lucky enough to come across our 2,500th (known) specie while working in woodland at the Causeway Nature Reserve last week.
Known as Dead Moll’s Fingers (Xylaria longipes), this species of club fungus grows singly or in groups on rotting wood, usually tree stumps. It gets its name due to its appearance, looking like spindly, blackened fingers that when snapped in half are pure white on the inside.
This fungus is saprophytic, which means it obtains the nutrients it needs from dead things, wood in this case. Deadwood is a highly important habitat for many species of fungi and invertebrates which rely upon it for food for part, or all, of their life cycle.
The particular site where Dead Moll’s Fingers was discovered is one of my favourites due to the large variety of species that thrive in the area.
223 species of fungi and lichen at Heathrow!
This site hosts many of the 223 species of fungi and lichens that have so far been identified at Heathrow.
There are undoubtedly many more to discover. The national list of fungi stands at over 17,000 species.
What many people might not know is that fungi are in their own Kingdom of living things – as they are neither plant nor animal.
What are Lichens then? Well, Lichens are organisms made up of a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and another “partner”, often algae.
Fungi are unable to produce their own food so instead take advantage of the ability of the algae to produce nutrients via photosynthesis (the use of the sunlight to produce nutrients).
A glow in the dark fungus…
There are a number of other unique fungi types in the decaying wood in that area including one that glows in the dark – Candesnuff Fungus! Other types in the area include Hazel Woodwart, Spring Polypore and Yellowing Curtain Crust Fungus, as well as other bracket and crust fungi.

Two new species of moss and a slug were also found on the same day: Common Feather-moss, Redshank Moss, and Tree Slug.
More about Causeway Nature Reserve…
Causeway Nature Reserve, also known as the Lower Balancing Pond, is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation at a Metropolitan level. This is primarily due to the fact that it forms part of the River Crane corridor and its historical landscape, much of which has changed little for hundreds of years.
We’re working hard to ensure this continues by monitoring the site closely and helping to plant more native flora. Last October, for example, I spent the day with a group of Heathrow Airport volunteers planting hundreds of native daffodil and bluebell bulbs.
It was clear to see last week that many of these were beginning to emerge and should flower in the next month, helping maintain what is a beautiful natural area.

Heathrow has been recognised with three titles at this year’s Skytrax World Airport Awards following a record year for customer satisfaction and passenger numbers.
For the second year running, Heathrow has the honour of being named as the ‘Best Airport in Western Europe’ by its passengers. The quality of the airport’s shops, restaurants and terminals have also been recognised with ‘Best Airport for Shopping’ for the seventh straight year and ‘World’s Best Airport Terminal’ for Terminal 5 for the fifth year in a row.
The Skytrax World Airport Survey is widely regarded as the quality benchmark for the world airport industry, assessing customer service and facilities across 388 airports. The World Airport Awards are independent of any airport control or input and are therefore an impartial benchmark of airport excellence and quality.

More people than ever chose Heathrow in 2015 with 75 million passengers passing through the terminals, as the airport achieved its highest ever passenger satisfaction rate. Heathrow has invested in more security lanes and more e-gates in immigration, new lounges and hotels and in training for front line colleagues.
As an example of Heathrow’s work in looking for new ways to improve customer service, first-timers to the UK can now get a unique guide to the idiosyncrasies and quirks of modern British life from Stephen Fry as they pass through the airport. The short film was created in response to a desire from arriving passengers to get a sense, from the moment they touchdown at Heathrow, of the UK’s culture.
Another successful year for Terminal 5 saw the completion of a three year £40 million programme to bring together the most luxurious fashion brands in the world to Terminal 5 and cement its fashionable reputation amongst frequent flyers. Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermes and Rolex joined the line up at Terminal 5, completing the line-up of 23 fashion and luxury brands, each of which has been beautifully re-designed to echo the store’s flagship location.
Heathrow has today revealed new plans for freight WebPortal aimed at consolidating loads, and decreasing the amount of trucks and emissions on roads around the airport. Encouraging freight company partners to operate sustainably is one of 10 priorities Heathrow has outlined for this year in its new Blueprint to Reduce Emissions, also launched today.
Heathrow’s plans for a freight WebPortal have been announced during the IATA World Cargo Symposium, where Heathrow has been named a finalist in the Air Cargo Excellence Awards in recognition of its customer performance, facilities, and value of cargo offering.
Incorporating sustainability into freight is a priority for Heathrow given the impact these operations have on the airport’s local environment.
Heathrow is the largest freight port by value in the UK, handling over 1.5 million tonnes of cargo a year. This activity also generates a substantive amount of vehicle movements a day in the Heathrow area for servicing, deliveries and cargo operations, along with their related emissions.
New WebPortal to be UK’s first geographically specific…
Heathrow’s proposed WebPortal would be the UK’s first geographically specific system of its kind. Subscribed members would exchange and share information about any spare capacity on their vehicles. Once a match has been found, operators could then negotiate a price for this space amongst themselves.
This Portal, along with measures like providing an off-airport distribution centre, increased monitoring of the use of local roads by freight vehicles, and tighter rules on vehicle licensing will ensure the number of freight vehicles will be maintained at today’s levels for years to come and that the lowest emission freight vehicles are encouraged to operate around Heathrow.

By collaborating with stakeholders across London, emissions of NOx from the airport have reduced by 16% over 5 years. Heathrow’s Blueprint for Emissions Reduction outlines the top ten actions the airport will be focussing on this year to continue building on this record and reduce emissions further. Besides Heathrow’s work with freight operators, other actions listed in the Blueprint include a new £16.2 million investment in equipment at gates to ensure aircraft don’t run their engines, as well as instituting “eco-driving” training for airside drivers to reduce emissions.

Heathrow’s cargo strategy outlines the airport’s vision for cargo. Today, it will maintain being the UK & Ireland’s cargo gateway, 2020 be the preferred transatlantic gateway for Europe, 2025 one of the best in Europe, and by 2030 the best in Europe for providing a timely and predictable cargo service.

In Heathrow’s latest bid to drive growth in the UK’s great cities and regions, new advertisements featuring Bristol & Bath go live today across all the terminals at the UK’s only hub airport.
The six-week partnership with Invest Bristol & Bath is part of a year-long campaign seeking to drive foreign direct investment across the UK, with the North East, Northern Ireland, Leeds and Glasgow already showcased across the airport.
The campaign gives Bristol & Bath a unique opportunity to showcase why the region is a great place to invest, work and live to the airport’s 22 million annual business travellers. The advertisements at Heathrow highlight the region’s strength in virtual reality, animation and robotics as well as its position as a world-class destination for innovation and creativity.
Serving more than 180 global destinations, Heathrow is already the West of England’s gateway to the world. New surface access improvements – including Western Rail Access which will cut journey times to Bristol and Bath by half an hour – will further boost inward investment and tourism to the region.

Yesterday, members of Whizz Kidz and other charities supporting young disabled and mobility impaired people, toured the airport to experience Heathrow’s service first-hand and to give advice on how to make all passengers’ journeys more comfortable and accessible.
Held as part of Disabled Access Day, the tour was organised by Heathrow together with Virgin Airways and Omniserv, and along with Whizz Kidz hosted members of Guide dogs for the blind, Runnymede Access Group, Surrey Disabled People’s Partnership, and Leonard Cheshire. This event formed part of the Whizz Kids’ #GetOnBoard campaign, which is pushing for a more inclusive transport system.
The tour’s aim was to enable people with a disability to better understand what assistance they can receive while flying from Heathrow and for them to see it as an enjoyable part of the journey, rather than another hurdle to overcome. Attendees were escorted in small groups around the airport, tracing the steps of a departing passenger with stops at check-in, security, baggage reclaim and boarding a Virgin Atlantic Dreamliner.
